- The Scene:
- The structure that now houses Viewpoint Brewing Co. was originally a commercial pottery studio run by John Laver of Eucalyptus Stoneware, who occupied the building for around 40 years. The large, commercial space was unassuming and went unnoticed for years. Though simple in design and ornamentation, it is prized for its location. The building sits alongside the San Dieguito Lagoon and Wildlife Bird Reserve – where great blue heron and osprey frequent – with the Coast-to-Crest trail running alongside the building’s exterior. The Viewpoint Brewing Co. team took their time transforming the space into what it is now, a full-service restaurant and brewery. The focal point is the unmatched panoramic view of the lagoon and the adjacent fairgrounds as seen through roll-up garage doors that open out to an expansive outdoor patio with communal picnic-style tables and cozy booths with their own fire pits. By completely opening the Northeast facing part of the building, the expansive views of the lagoon and mountains in the distance are exposed. The space is completely indoor/outdoor, with both bar and table seating indoors and an inviting patio with seating options that are meant to bring the community together and spark conversation.
- Design:
- The 7,000 square-foot brewery, tasting room and restaurant’s design combines hard industrial materials like steel, concrete and glass with organic, natural woods and plant life to complement the former warehouse’s architectural design. The combination of these materials speaks to the juxtaposition of the industrial building and one of Del Mar’s most vibrant natural resources – the lagoon. As a nod to the space’s former tenant, designer Meghan Koll commissioned ceramicist John Laver to make the one-of-a-kind ceramic planters that hang from the ceiling – home to vibrant green Pothos plants. To encourage guests to linger and relax, Meghan had Astroturf installed on the side of the restaurant where games like Cornhole and Ladder Toss can be found and commissioned a row of custom group swings by local craftsman Peter VanZutphen. Local woodworker Eli Mirandon created the restaurant’s live edge tables, crafted from local Torrey Pine.

- Food, Restaurants, Cafes:
- In the kitchen is Executive Chef Gunnar Planter. At Viewpoint, Gunnar has developed a menu of modern dishes heavily influenced by classical cuisine. Using local purveyors and only hyper-seasonal ingredients, Gunnar’s menu showcases the collaborative nature of the concept, drawing from the team’s collective viewpoints to arrive at something that’s a true reflection of the team. Entrées include Smoked Gouda Macaroni with chorizo sausage, pork belly and herbed breadcrumb crisp and Mussels & Nduja with shishito peppers, garlic Hefeweizen broth and served with a grilled baguette. Appetizers, salads and dessert round out the full menu. To speak to the collaborative nature of the concept, Chef Gunnar uses Viewpoint Brewing Co. beer in many of his recipes, and offers a flight pairing board featuring 2 oz. flights paired with bites from the menu or off menu.
- Bars & Lounges:
- Grab a seat at our custom wood bartop and enjoy our specialty pours - by the glass or create a flight. It's the best place in the house to watch the game on TV, catch up with friends and enjoy some light banter with our bartenders. If you are looking for a more intimate seating location, try a glass of wine at our table nooks overlooking the lagoon. With heat lamps and in-table fireplaces, it's the coziest place to sip a glass of Pinot Noir.
