- The Scene:
- Terrapin Hill Farm is located in central Kentucky, and easy hour trip from Lexington or Frankfort, or about an hour and a half from Louisville. After driving past beautiful views of rolling hills and picturesque farms, you'll descend into the Chaplin River valley where you'll enter Terrapin Hill Farm (as you enter the gate notice the hand built rock wall which mimics the centuries-old slant walls found around the property). You'll pass the swimming hole at the Chaplin River, then you'll likely see a couple farm horses grazing in their pasture near the 100 year old farmhouse. The reception area is further back on the farm, well away from any road noise. You'll pass the barn (maybe even some happy pigs rooting in their pen, or a flock of chickens) and the pond and enter the back field where you'll find the Pavilion and Chapel Stage. You'll immeditately feel the serene, welcoming nature of the land.
- Design:
- Terrapin Hill Farm is named partly for the hill behind the farmhouse that looks like it could be a giant turtle shell. From the top of the what we call The Knob you can see a large part of the 400 acre farm, including the Chaplin River and several cattle farms that dot the surrounding hillsides. The view is spectacular and The Knob, just a short walk uphill from the Pavilion, is a popular place to hold wedding ceremonies.
Almost all the structures on the farm (except the farmhouse) were built by the current owner. The Pavilion is a 40'x60' covered area which can hold up to 200 seated guests (more can be accommodated by adding an extra tent nearby). It is very comfortable on a warm day - a light breeze is often felt and the nearby trees provide shade. On a cool day the curtains can be drawn closed to keep in the extra heat provided by propane heaters. A stage at one end can be used for the musical entertainment. Restrooms with flush toilets are just a short walk from the Pavilion.
The Chapel Stage is an amazing structure that was recently rebuilt in 2015 from cedar trees harvested just up the hill from where it stands. The A-frame shape has an unparalleled grandeur and openness, and the setting among the tall trees makes you truly feel at one with Nature. The seating area in front can accommodate any number of guests. It too, is just a short walk from the Pavilion.
The 100 year old farmhouse is available for the bridal party to change in, or the rooms can be rented overnight. The large beautiful kitchen (recently renovated in 2015) looks out over the horse pastures and up at The Knob. It features a large wooden work table, perfect for putting together last minute decorations or preparing snacks or meals. - Standout Venue Features:
- Terrapin Hill Farm provides that "extra touch" to your country wedding by providing a bonfire for your guests to enjoy. Don't forget the s'mores fixings! We'll build the fire, light it, and tend it for most of the evening. If you choose to stay overnight there will be plenty of wood provided to keep the fire burning all night long. After the traditional toasts and dancing and socializing is over, relax with close friends and family and keep the celebration going as long as you like.
For the environmentally conscious, this is the perfect venue as the electricity is provided by solar power! Also, you can choose to make it a "farm-to-table" event by serving food raised right here on the farm such as chicken, pork, beef, and organic vegetables. We keep it eco-friendly by providing chinaware and silverware and any leftovers are happily consumed by the pigs. You can even pick your floral arrangements from the garden or the wide variety of wildflowers growing naturally in the fields.
There is a playground next to the Pavilion - a happy place for kids of all ages and the swings make a great photo op. Don't forget photos near the old farm equipment - most of it horse drawn - which was found in various locations around the farm. The horses in the front paddocks will be happy to pose for photos too!
And we are pet friendly. If your dogs are part of your wedding party or you just want them to be part of your special day, feel free to bring them! - Extra Perks:
