Wolftrap Farm Est. 2013
Gordonsville, VA, United States
There is a 12 pound bass living in the pond behind the Pond House. She was caught and released summer of 2015.
Dolley Madison exiled her misbehaving ladies' maid to Wolftrap Farm (which the Madison's called "Blackmeadow" when they owned it) for a few weeks when she caught her stealing.
Deer and turkeys are all over the farm. You can often see mobs of turkeys in the big horse paddock beside the Milker's Cottage.
Black bear do come through the farm from time to time, tearing holes in the woven wire fences.
The bell-roofed barn was built around 1940 when the farm became a "modern" dairy farm. Before it was built, the second barn sat in that spot. The second barn (the rectangular one) has a Chestnut frame that dates to 1856 and it used to sit where the bell-roofed barn sits now.
The Cuthrell family purchased the farm from the Von Wulffin family, a German family in which the wife is a titled princess and the husband is a baron. After Germany was reunited, they moved to the former East Germany to reclaim their ancestral estates, and sold their farm in Virginia.

- The Scene:
- When you take a drive through the countryside near Charlottesville, Virginia, you find yourself gawking at the beautiful farms, set amid rolling hills, with mountain backdrops. You see the long, winding drives leading up to farm complexes in the middle of hundreds of acres of cattle pastures. You see the miles of board fences, the horses in their paddocks, the iconic barns. You see a manor house in the distance, which is the center of it all. You see the "dependancies" - the cottages formerly used by farm workers and perhaps even quarters for house servants from before the Civil War. And you wish you could drive in and experience such a place for a while.
Wolftrap Farm has all of that, and more, and you can drive in and experience it as a place to celebrate family, friends, weddings, reunions, and so forth. After turning off the highway, you have a mile to drive on our farm road, past the ponds, the cattle, the horses, before you reach the farm complex at the top of the hill. First time visitors often park, get out of their vehicles, and just stand and stare in every direction, trying to take in the entire panorama. They find themselves in the middle of a 600-acre estate, out of earshot of any traffic, viewing beautiful mountains, rolling pastures, woodlands, ponds, boxwoods, horses, cattle, tree-lines, and farm life.
Then they go inside the homes on the property and find them to be modern (though two are ante-bellum), gorgeously furnished (with the help and guidance of our professional decorator), and utterly charming.
Over 200 years ago, James Madison (4th President) owned this farm with his wife, Dolley. Their home, Montpelier, is just across the mountain, less than five miles away as the crow flies. "Mr. Jimmy" used to say that his Montpelier home was "Just a squirrel's jump from heaven." We say Wolftrap Farm is even closer. Our guests agree. A common phrase written in our guest books is "Thank you for sharing this little bit of heaven with us." We just say, "You are welcome."
But don't take our word for it. Just do an internet search for "Wolftrap Farm Gordonsville Reviews" and see what you find. - Design:
- The Manor House was mostly built in 1856, and was added onto around 1900. It features four bedrooms, four baths, and there is a small second kitchen upstairs in the "Suite". The front lawn of the Manor House is the favorite ceremony site for weddings, with its view of the mountains, the peremeter of large boxwoods, and the walnut trees that frame pictures of the ceremony scene. The patio behind the Manor House features the hot tub. There are horseshoe pits and a rope swing out back as well.
Thirty yards behind the Manor House is the Servants' Cottage, also dating from 1856. Yes, it was a slave cabin for two slave families (a duplex). It now is a modern "studio" with its own hitchen and bath, and a huge covered patio on the back side.
The Pond House is a more modern two bedroom cottage down the hill. It is casual and comfortable, with a large screened porch in back, but the real attraction of the Pond House is - the Pond. It is gorgeous, full of fish (two state citation bass have been caught and released from it), and is home to countless birds, frogs, turtles, salamanders, and other pond life.
The Milker's Cottage is totally elegant inside. The colors are soft, and the pine floors are stunning. There is a large screened porch where you can watch the horses as you take your meals outside.
Each part of your group will insist that "their" house is the best. - Standout Venue Features:
- What is special about our farm is that you can rent the entire farm and have it all to yourself for the week-end or for a day or a week. Our wedding groups all rave about being able to have everyone together, eating meals together, decorating the Pavilion together, breaking out for guy/girl activities or adult/kid activities, such as fishing, playing pool and pingpong, hot tubbing, rope swinging, hiking in the woods, riding bikes, petting horses, going to one of the local wineries or historic sites, etc. It is the same with our family reunion and extended family vacation groups, where with a longer stay, they can take in more off-site activities, but still their favorate activities are just enjoying the farm itself.
And do not overlook the benefit of having four different houses to retire to when you want to be more alone or with those you are closer to. Everyone does not have to be all together all the time. - Extra Perks:
- Renting the Pavilion gives you use of everyting in the Pavilion, which includes:
