- The Scene:
This is a beautiful historic property that dates back to the 1840s - established and maintained for many years by the family of Thomas Shepherd, the town's founder, the farm has played an important role in the social and cultural historyof the region.
On entering the property, one is greeted by a quaint wrought iron fence with the name " WILD GOOSE" inscribed at the top. A winding tree-lined drive leads one past the ponds - and a lucky glimpse will find geese and herons at play. The path continues past the old mansion and to the gala barn. Here, there are views to pastures and rolling hills dotted by an extensive network of stone walls and a collection of picturesque outbuildings.
Time is unrushed in this place that is exquisitely private and serene - the perfect place for your special event.- Design:
- The old mansion has undergone major construction phases resulting in a confluence of different architectural styles. Features of the mansion suggest Greek Revival, while others point to a New Orleans style which was likely informed by Rezin Shepherd's years there as a successful businessman. Under Edwin Jarrett, an engineer known for his work on the Holland Tunnel in New York, the mansion underwent Colonial Revival addiitons in the early 20th century.
Signiifcant outbuildings include a cut stone spring house built in the style of a Greek temple, a stone smoke/meat house, a stone and frame carriage shed and a brick ice house.
The originial barn, constructed circa 1840, is a Pennsylvania bank barn which is typical of the Pennsylvania, Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and northern Virginia regions. In recent years, it was renovated to include a 3250 square foot open beamed space which is used to celebrate special oocasions. - Extra Perks:
- Wild Goose is particularly well suited for a unique "DIY" experience - we'll provide beautiful sunrises, the song of the wind, and still nights under a canopy of stars. You provide the rest! Whether it is a tender duet of committment, the sturm und drang of a business venture, a thought provoking art installation or a playful sequence of vinyasa movements, we encourage you to bring your creativity. Be inspired!
