This Must Be The Place / Mas Casamitjana Est. 2018
This Must Be The Place / Mas Casamitjana, Moià, Barcelona, Spain
The bathroom in one of the bedrooms features a hatch into a room that was used to hide people! This room was originally the chicken coop (all the rooms on the ground floor would have originally been for animals) and the hatch would have been hidden under straw on the floor. If bandits came to visit the family could hide here. The ONLY way into this room is through this hatch!
The house features other similar quirks, including a couple of holes in the floor just above the front door so the owners could shoot any visiters they didn't like the look of!

- The Scene:
This Must Be The Place is the perfect spot for your dream Barcelona wedding or event. The house, the scenery and the incredible views create a truly stunning backdrop, and the choice of spaces for each element of your day will help to magnify all the magical moments as you celebrate with your family and friends. Looking for a beautiful and unique wedding and event venue near Barcelona? Look no further.
We have several event spaces in and around the house for you and your guests to enjoy, and they have all been designed to give you total freedom as to how and where you would like to experience individual elements of your day.The centrepiece are our three lovingly restored conjoined barns ‘Els Graners’ that open out onto the central courtyard ‘El Barri’. The stairs and balcony lead you up to ‘L’Era’, our large floral yard, and the small but perfectly formed ‘Caseta del Sol’ (The Sun House). And down a few steps from here you’ll find our terrace garden ‘La Feixa’.
Say ‘I do’, eat, drink and dance – in or out (or shake it all about) – you decide.
- Design:
- The centuries-old 'Mas Casamitjana' has been lovingly refurbished in a Modern Rustic style. Our philosophy has been to respectfully restore what was old, and where we have added new features we have done so in a more modern style. So all the walls are the same rustic stone construction built by hand by incredibly skillful people 100s of years ago. The roofs needed to be almost completely replaced and we have done this as faithfully to the original constructions as possible.
The Barns (Els Graners) all face into an interior courtyard (El Barri) and we have installed 4 meter high modern bi-fold doors and windows here to let in lots of light, and also so we can open these all up and create one very large indoor/outdoor space. They look fantastic! The floor of El Barri features beautiful square hand-made tiles that would have originally been used for the farm's grain threshing floor (a long long time ago). Inside Els Graners we have two different types of flooring - in one part we have modern large format porcelain tiles with a subtle hexagonal imprint that were designed in Italy, and in the other part we have re-used some original rectangular terracotta tiles and arranged them in a herringbone formation.
The majestic stairs that lead up inside Els Graners feature a subtle irregular design detail to their railings, and the balcony they lead up to has a modern interpretation of a classic Catalan tile design on its underside (rectangular tiles where one diagonal corner is dipped in a white-coloured glaze, while the other half is left as natural terracotta). These tiles also feature on the underside of part of the roof in Els Graners. They look amazing!
Blue and terracotta versions of these tiles can also be found on the underside of the roof in La Caseta del Sol (The Sun House). And on the floor in this lovely space we have another type of Italian-designed porcelain tile that features a subtle 'fossil' imprint.
We worked with a very talented garden designer to choose the plants and flowers in our large garden yard (L'Era), and the results are spectacular! To complement this we re-used some old steel beams from an old farm building to create a triangular arch - which is perfect for wedding ceremonies - and also restored a large dry-stone wall. This area is completed some beautiful hand-made parasols that we commissioned and imported from Myanmar (Burma), and some magical festoon lighting that drapes from a central wooden pole reclaimed from the barn's original beams.
Talking of lighting... while the whole venue looks incredible in the sunshine by day, it truly comes alive at night! Externally, the festoon lighting in L'Era is complemented by subtle lighting that has been placed in all the flower beds to wash up the flowers and the stone walls behind them. Internally we have created some bespoke lighting installations including a pink neon This Must Be The Place sign, exposed LED filament bulbs in galvanised conduit housing, and a handmade birdcage pendant. Plus it is all capped off with a huge mirrorball for those late night disco moments!
The accommodation again follows the Modern Rustic style, with original wooden beams and some traditional furniture blending wonderfully with bespoke lighting features and carefully chosen fabrics and prints.

- Els Graners:
- The centrepiece of the venue are our lovingly restored stone barns – ‘Els Graners’ in Catalan. Previously three separate structures that were once used to house farm animals over two levels, they have been transformed into two large double-height venue spaces connected by a majestic arch. Combined Els Graners can seat up to 150 people with the doors closed. Forming an L-shape, these buildings fully open out through tall glass bifold doors onto our central courtyard ‘El Barri’.
- - Max Capacity: 150
- El Barri:
- ‘El Barri’ translates from the Catalan as ‘the neighbourhood’ but in the case of Masia farmhouses like ours it is also the traditional Catalan name for the enclosed exterior courtyard space in front of the house. With all the doors of Els Graners open it combines with El Barri to become an incredible multi-use event space that could seat 150+ for a wedding banquet, or even more standing, dancing, drinking or lounging, with a perfect mix of sun and shade keeping everyone happy. Perhaps you’d like to use on
- - Max Capacity: 100
- L'Era:
- The stairs and balcony lead you up from Els Graners up to a large open space surrounded by plants, flowers & a pretty stone wall. L’Era is a perfect location for a wedding ceremony with the plants, flowers and our triangular arch beautifully framing the moment. But equally this unique event space is ideal to enjoy some canapés and fizz, and plenty big enough for your wedding banquet if you’d like to enjoy it under the stars.
- - Max Capacity: 250
- La Caseta del Sol:
- The small but perfectly formed ‘La Caseta del Sol’ (which translates from Catalan as ‘The Sun House’) sits right next to L’Era. We gave it this name due to the fantastic light that pours through the large low windows in the afternoon making this a great place to slow down and chill out. It features a bar area and some relaxed seating and, again, you are free to choose how you would like to use the space – eg. for smaller events the La Caseta del Sol would be fantastic as a disco!
- - Max Capacity: 40
- La Feixa:
- On another side of Els Graners, and down some steps from L’Era, you’ll find our terrace garden ‘La Feixa’. This spot has some of the best views of the Pyrenees and could also be a magical place any element of your special day – particularly the ceremony. We also have a fantastic pizza oven and BBQ grill here which we can fire up for smaller events.
- - Max Capacity: 150
