The Cook’s Atelier is a cooking school, epicurean destination and wine shop located in the center of historic Beaune, France that celebrates the connection between farmer and cook. Founded in 2008 by mother-daughter duo, Marjorie Taylor and Kendall Smith Franchini, The Cook’s Atelier offers hands-on cooking classes, market tours, seasonal suppers and workshops throughout the year with the goal of educating local and international visitors about seasonal ingredients, classic French cooking techniques and Burgundy’s wine capital. The group recently added a wine shop on its premises that features an ever-evolving collection of hand-chosen, small production wines from Burgundy and the surrounding regions. The Cook’s Atelier has been increasingly well received since its founding, inspiring guests to adapt its philosophy and recreate the experience at home. In response, Marjorie and Kendall curated a digital èpicerie coined The French Larder, which offers an exclusive selection of olive oils, spices, artisanal cooking tools, vintage finds, and a line of Mauviel French copper pots, made soley for the atelier. Chef and co-owner Marjorie Taylor is an enthusiast of farmers markets, small artisan food producers, and the philosophy pioneered by Alice Waters. Her rustic, french-inspired fare highlights seasonality and classic technique, with a specialty in tart making. Prior to moving to France, she was the co-chef proprietor of the award winning neighborhood restaurant and cooking school, Ruby Beet Gourmet, and studied at La Varenne under noted teacher and cookbook author, Anne Willan. Marjorie’s daughter and co-owner, Kendall Smith Franchini, is a wine expert that studied viticulture and formerly worked with Legrand Filles et Fils in Paris, and Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant in their Burgundian office.
