The Cape, a Thompson Hotel Est. 2015
The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, Misiones del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico
The Cape’s full-service spa, Currents, is a particularly unique spa destination in Los Cabos. Softly lit with dark charcoal grey walls and minimal art, this was an intentional architectural and design decision made to remove extraneous stimuli and allow the organic sights, sounds, and natural décor of the nearby desert-meets-the-sea landscape to set the ambiance. It's a must-do for a bride- or groom-to-be looking to relax before the big day, or as a special treat for guests and bridal party members.
Every Tuesday afternoon the talented team from Chef Enrique Olvera's Manta hold interactive cooking classes
The hotel is located on a popular locals surf spot (Monuments Beach); if you're an avid and strong surfer, it's considered one of the best and most unique breaks (its a left hand break) in the area beloved by pros
The hotel was designed by superstar Mexican architect Javier Sanchez. Throughout the property, there are jaw-droppingly beautiful and truly unique spots for capturing one-of-a-kind photography. The Cape’s signature aesthetic blends both indoors and out and boasts a contemporary Baja-meets-Southern California cool décor, with unparalleled views of the Sea of Cortez from virtually anywhere on the property. Underscoring this indoors-meets-out design style is the resort’s main entrance. Guests first arrive on property by entering an expansive open-air lobby, complete with a stunning locally crafted art sculpture (made from area driftwood collected after Hurricane Odile), views of the crashing waves along Monuments Beach, a sunken lobby bar (sunken to ensure the modern furniture does not obscure the view), and fresh ocean air breezing by. The color palette of the lobby includes dark greys and a charcoal colored floor and ceiling, designed intentionally to attract the eye’s natural line of sight out towards the vibrant blues of the ocean water (reminiscent of the camera obscura effect). Time and again, the team hears guests exclaim it’s one of the most stunning hotel entrances they’ve encountered.

- The Scene:
The Cape, a Thompson Hotel debuted in June 2015 in the Cabo San Lucas region of Baja California Sur, Mexico, situated along one of the most desirable stretches of white sand in Los Cabos: the world-renowned surfers’ paradise known as Monuments Beach. The all-new luxury hotel features 161 guestrooms, all with unobstructed views of the Sea of Cortez and the destination’s famed icon, El Arco—a stunning natural phenomenon of granite carved into an arch by centuries of wind and sea exposure. The first Thompson hotel to open in Mexico, The Cape effortlessly blends the brand’s upscale urban aesthetic with a distinct 1960s Baja-meets-Southern California vibe. Guests enjoy two pools, including an infinity pool with swim-up bar and another built within a natural rock formation found on property; a sixth-story rooftop lounge and garden with unmatched views of the city and sea; an intimate spa and fitness center with a private outdoor cabana for treatments with an ocean view; and a diverse array of chef-driven food and beverage destinations (including a signature restaurant from acclaimed Mexican Chef Enrique Olvera). One-, two-, and three-bedroom Suites and Villas are available, including four, two-story Penthouse Suites with private rooftops and plunge pools and the premier Surfer Villa—a two-story luxury suite ideal for a luxe vacation, private event, or intimate wedding. Every guestroom on property offers unobstructed ocean views, as well as outdoor terraces—many boasting hanging daybeds for enjoying the picturesque surroundings.
- Design:
- Celebrated architects Javier Sánchez and Benedikt Fahlbusch, alongside distinguished Mexican interior designer Marisabel Gómez Vázquez, are the creative force behind The Cape. Together, these talents effortlessly blend the upscale urban sensibility and refined edge synonymous with Thompson Hotels with a vibrant 1960s Baja-meets-Southern California vibe. It is evident throughout the hotel—from the public spaces to the guestrooms—that The Cape is highly inspired by the environment and culture in which it resides. The resort’s unique geographical positioning and precise architectural build allow for unparalleled views of both the ocean and El Arco from virtually any vantage point in the hotel. This connection to the sea and sand is woven throughout the property’s design, as seen in highlights like custom furniture handmade in Mexico; original ceramic pieces from Guadalajara artist Jose Noé Suro; lush native landscaping and greenery that blur the line between indoor and out; two pools located just steps from the beach, one built within a natural rock formation on property; an original sculpture of a life-size gray whale constructed from salvaged driftwood at the center of the lobby; and more.
A mid-century modern aesthetic serves as the foundation for the resort’s design, which is further complemented by a warm, beachside ambiance and Mexican art and design. Sánchez’s nods to architects such as Luis Barragán and John Lautner are evident in the resort’s juxtaposition of both organic and modern materials. As guests arrive at the resort, they are first greeted with an ascending driveway abundant with lush greenery and flanked by several larger-than-life, Richard Serra-inspired art pieces. The open-layout hotel lobby combines the aforementioned handmade Mexican furniture with a collection of retro, Malibu surf-inspired artand photography adorning the walls. - Standout Venue Features:
- Every room on property offers stunning, unobstructed views of the Sea of Cortez and famous El Arco monument. Superstar architect Javier Sanchez had this in mind when he positioned the hotel just so architecturally – he wanted to ensure every guest enjoys this gorgeous setting to the fullest.
Overall the look and feel of the resort is quite unique among its luxury neighbors. The Cape blends modern architecture with an open-air layout and integration of its natural Baja surroundings for a contemporary-meets-organic feel (a pivot from the more traditional, stucco-clad look of other luxury resorts)
The Cape is located directly on Monuments Beach, an intimate stretch of sand celebrated the world around for its famous left hand surf break. It’s one of the few left hand breaks in the area (if not the only) and has become a go-to spot for surfers in the know. While beaches are not typically private in Los Cabos, this particular beach avoids the crowds as it's tucked off the main drives of Cabo San Lucas. So for beach lovers, it’s a nice respite from the busier options in the region—and all you have to do is walk out of your room to enjoy it.
The Cape also brings a compelling lifestyle element unique to Cabo – while it’s a short distance from the famous Cabo San Lucas nightlife scene, guests can enjoy a more intimate, sophisticated take on entertainment without ever leaving the hotel. The Cape features a rooftop lounge, bar and craft beer garden with a resident DJ spinning (and has played host to star-studded celebrations with talent including Samantha Ronson, Ana Calderon, IO Echo, and others)
Manta – for the foodies, The Cape’s signature restaurant is helmed by multi-award-winning chef Enrique Olvera. Following the ceremony, guests can celebrate in style at a reception filled with true Mexican hospitality. Menus crafted by the kitchen of celebrated Chef Enrique Olvera can be customized to include everything from passed hors d’eovures like duck confit “barbacoa,” jalepeno conch fritters, and green chorizo and lobster on corn sopes to stations featuring ceviche and tiraditos, tamales, quesadillas, and more. Dessert examples include multigrain churros, bunuelos and chocolate sauce; cinnamon rice pudding with dried fruits; and mango cheesecake with spiced berries compote. Bar packages can be designed to showcase the best Mexican flavors and products including tequila, mescal, fresh fruit margaritas, locally brewed beer, and signature cocktails. Custom cocktails can also be crafted by award-winning bartender Osvaldo Vasquez, upon request.
The Cape’s Penthouse and Villa options include expansive outdoor patios, some with private plunge pools and BBQs, full kitchens and cocktail bars and is a lot like staying in your own Baja home. However, at some resorts, this can mean staying quite a ways away from the excitement and lifestyle happenings of your hotel, and requiring a golf cart or transportation to get to the dining, spa, lounges, and more. Not so at The Cape. While guests can enjoy the feel of residential living if they so choose, the intimate 161-room boutique hotel is designed to ensure guests are always just a brief walk from the sixth-story rooftop lounge, spa, pools, Manta and more.

Throughout the spa, guests enjoy peeks of the stunning ocean views and indigenous rock formations on property, while a refreshing natural air current flows throughout (thanks to the smart architectural design of Sanchez, this intentional design element inspired the name Currents). The spa features a steam room, sauna, hot and cold plunge pools, a couples treatment room with rain showers and a private pool, and two ocean-view cabanas for al fresco treatments. Guests are literally just steps from the sand and sea when enjoying a treatment at these outdoor cabanas, while the relaxation lobby (featuring the hot/cold plunge pools and an array of infused waters, refreshing snacks, and more) also features this incredible view out to the Sea of Cortez. Attention to detail and refined service are hallmarks of the Currents hospitality ethos, from the warming neck wrap offered post-massage to the veteran and expertly trained staff.
