- The Scene:
Opened in 1942 as Charleston's premier movie house, the American Theater's regal Art Deco architecture and timeless Hollywood glamour make this sophisticated event venue worthy of red carpets and dazzling marquees.
- Design:
- In 1996 Charles and Celeste Patrick purchased The American Theater and began a meticulous restoration of the building, which had fallen into significant disrepair. Patrick Properties’ team of founders and architects worked to preserve historic artifacts – salvaging the original vintage marquee, cotton press medallions and restroom tiles. Soundboards and film projectors were also recovered as part of the theater’s display collection. The process would not only breathe new life into this heirloom; it also led a resurgence of development on Upper King Street.
- Standout Venue Features:
- The meticulous restoration of The American Theater garnered a starring role in The Notebook.
For their work on The American Theater, Patrick Properties was awarded the Carolopolis Award from the Preservation Society of Charleston in 1997, followed by The National Honor Award - the company’s most prestigious designation from The National Trust For Historic Preservation, and the first instance this title has been granted to a privately held institution in the state of South Carolina.
