- The Scene:
- Tallula's is a coastal Mexican restaurant open for dinner, happy hour and weekend brunch, and just a few hundred feet from the beach. The colorful, vibrant space offers full buy-outs for up to 250 guests, along with areas for smaller gatherings, including an upstairs private dining room and bar for 30-50 people, a large canopied patio, and “Felix’s Bar,” an indoor/outdoor lounge-style space, perfect for mixing and mingling. Whether your looking for something a bit more fun and casual, or an elevated family-style dinner to really wow your guests, we have something for all occasions.
- Design:
- The pagoda-style building dates back to 1984 and was originally a Japanese restaurant before Marix shortly took it over. Needless to say, the unique space has a long history in the neighborhood as a Mexican restaurant. Original features including large oak and glass doors, dark wood-paneled ceilings, rustic columns and ornate Hawaiian Koa wood banquettes re-upholstered in light gray fabric. White ceilings and a subtle coastal color palette inspired by nature—orange sunsets and green palms—evoke the relaxed sensibilities of Tulum, Mexico and Tallula’s beach town locale. Walls are decorated with mid-century modern-inspired artwork and a festive hanging in the lobby is hand-embroidered with animals and flowers by the Otomi people, who hail from Mexico’s central plateau region. Vibrant splashes of sea foam green and turquoise create an aesthetically engaging bar, with an array of vintage orange glass lanterns saved from Marix dangling above and a neon pink sign with “Felix’s Bar” (an ode to Josh and Zoe’s youngest child) written in cursive. Custom, fabricated painted steel tables with bright hand-painted Mexican Talavera tiles by Silverlake’s Further Store are featured throughout the bar area and enclosed patio. An open kitchen faces the main dining room and is lined with bright yellow tiles on the counter. The restaurant’s central staircase features a colorful, dangling modern sculpture that nods to the rock garden below, and leads up to an event space with a dedicated bar, accommodating 50 for a standing cocktail party and 32 for a seated dinner. Blonde wood floors, large communal tables and white walls lighten up the private dining room, while gray chairs and black, latticed metal bar stools lend a sense of modernity to the vintage, beach canyon-chic décor. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the parking lot was transformed into a large outdoor patio with a tall, clear awning hung with bistro lights strung from wooden beams. Trellised and potted plants and murals painted by local artists lend to the vibrant, beachside vibes.
