Normal Heights’ Sycamore Den is a cocktail lounge that pays tribute to the late 1970’s middle-class family.
Inspired by his own upbringing, Owner Nick Zanoni creates an atmosphere like that of his own 1970’s upbringing near the sycamore trees along the American River in Sacramento, CA. With a classic cocktail menu featuring drinks favored by the typical 1970s dad and 24 beers on tap, you couldn’t feel more at home than lounging in the space inspired by folk music, vintage light fixtures, shotguns, and wood paneling.
The two most popular cocktails (currently) are 'The Ticket' and the 'Crime of Passion.'

- The Scene:
- Normal Heights’ Sycamore Den is a cocktail lounge that pays tribute to the 1970's when Dad was bearded, strong, smoked Newports, quenched his thirst with lite beer (unabashedly) and viewed life through yellow-tinted lenses. Inspired by his own childhood, Owner Nick Zanoni, created an atmosphere like that of his own 1970’s upbringing near the sycamore trees along the American River in Sacramento, CA. Designed by the award-winning Bells and Whistles team, the inspiration behind Sycamore Den’s nostalgic design is a modern take on the late 1970’s middle-class family living room, complete with a functioning fireplace and (non-functioning) wall hung shotguns. With a classic cocktail menu featuring drinks favored by the typical 1970s dad and 24 beers on tap, you couldn’t feel more at home at the Den.
- Design:
- Located in the only fitting location, Normal Heights - one of San Diego’s most historical family neighborhoods – Sycamore Den was designed by the award-winning team, Bells & Whistles. The space has been transformed into a modern take on the late 1970’s middle-class family living room. A player piano on a raised platform welcomes patrons with lively piano renditions of popular tunes. Colorful vintage light fixtures provide a dim glow over the lengthy bar crafted out of repurposed oak flooring, while an impressive 16’ fireplace provides a focal point to the inviting sunken lounge area. The era-appropriate décor features (non-functioning) replica shotguns and rifles, rock, banjos, fiddles and heavy amber-hued glassware.
