Eats & Drinks
Food, Restaurants, Cafes, Bars & Lounges
Food, Restaurants, Cafes:

Refined yet relaxed. World class food and beverage. Award winning Executive Chef Bernard Prim leads the culinary team at Nihiwatu.

Bernard’s culinary inspiration is borne from his love of travel; his personal and professional experiences have included his native Mexico, Europe, Thailand, Middle-East and island-to-island exploration of the tastes of Indonesia – all influence his cooking.

Our approach is to ‘inspire from the garden’, using only the very best and freshest ingredients that are homegrown from the earth, raised on grains or caught that day.

Menara:

Located at the highest point of the resort, our spacious open-air Menara Bale is inspired by local Sumbanese architecture and boasts the tallest Sumbanese roof on the island exquisitely crafted from teak wood.

Inside, the décor has a cosseting yet relaxed feel with books, games, a pool table and table tennis; perfect for families. In the afternoons, we serve a Sumbanese Afternoon Tea with freshly made banana bread, brownies and raisin scones with home made Papaya, Pineapple and Strawberry preserves.

Adjacent to Menara, is our sandy-floored Movie Theatre showing daily films for children or showcasing sporting events on request for our guests.

Nio Beach Club:

Steps from the sea, Nio Beach Club and its open-air pavilions serve the highest quality fresh ingredients for lunch: just caught fish, delicious salads; items from the grill and freshly made pizzas from our large clay oven.

On Wednesday nights the open-air pavilions at Nio Beach Club are dramatically transformed into an extraordinary setting for our Sumba White Nights Party and legendary Indonesian BBQ.

Ombak:

The hub of social activity is the main sandy-floored Ombak (meaning wave) restaurant and bar lounge.

Ombak, an exquisitely crafted open-air restaurant, serves a la carte breakfast and dinner daily with a relaxed convivial atmosphere. During the week we create special dining experiences including a spectacular welcome Indonesian BBQ on Thursday nights.

The large deck outside cantilevered over the ocean offers relaxed lounge seating and a spectacular private dining experience: The Nest, perched on the crest of the ocean, perfect for a romantic dinner or an intimate group meal.

On Sunday evenings, we create a magical ‘Movie Night Under the Stars’ experience for our guests to relax after dinner in Ombak restaurant.

Destination Dining:

A vacation is about gaining new experiences. As you discover a whole new world in Sumba in terms of culture and a way of life, you will also expand your culinary horizons at Nihiwatu.

We have created a selection of very unique and inspiring dining adventures. Dine in our romantic tree-house platform hanging dramatically over the breaking waves of the Indian Ocean, at the nearby Nihi Oka valley. Take a picnic in your own private paradise at Konda Maloba Bay, nestled on the edge of a National Park. Or, allow us to craft your own, private dining experience poolside at your villa.
