Venue Setting
In the hinterland of northern Scandinavia, some 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, you find an untamed landscape of 450 million year old mountains, glacial rivers and enormous taiga forests. Jukkasjärvi is local tongue for ”meeting place by the river” and for centuries, explorers, tradesmen, Sámi and settlers have gathered here. In this village, ICEHOTEL is reborn in a new guise each winter. Using the walls, floors and ceilings of the hotel as a canvas, the artsist give each room of the hotel a unique design and theme. ICEHOTEL comprises not just the hotel, but also warm rooms, meeting and dining spaces. ecember to April, the iconic ice bar, an ice church and the dome-shaped Aurora Hall theatre (both within the ice structure) are available for private events. Additionally, there are heated areas that can be used year-round for events. Drawing on the local culture and with vivid history, both ICEHOTEL Restaurant and the village homestead are excellent options.
Ice or winter theme
A glistening structure of pure ice and an art exhibition with hotel beds. ICEHOTEL is 5500 square meters of ephemeral art, inspired and made possible by mother nature. Each year, tons and tons of the pure ice of Torne is harvested from the river. Like a series of etchings, each block is a piece of art in its own right; produced completely on nature’s terms. ICEHOTEL is open December through mid-April. In May, it reunites with the river - transforming to a maze of modern ruins in the process. ICEHOTEL Restaurant
Built in the 1920’s, this building has a diverse and fascinating history. It originally served as an old persons’ home for Sámi people of the surrounding villages. It was discontinued in the 1960’s, after which space researchers of the nearby Esrange rocket range used it as their temporary housing while conducting projects here. In 1983 the inn and later restaurant was opened. The Sámi and the rocketeers still visit for dinner. The ice still makes for a central element, with the bespoke ice menu and the option of personally designed ice blocks adorning the tables.
Rustic Scandinavian
The timbered rooms, some dating back to the 1700’s are rich in character and history. Over the years, it has housed a school for the village children and a reputable inn frequented by the founders of mining town Kiruna at the turn of the century. The Homestead restaurant serves hearty traditional dishes with local flavors and organic beers and wines. Think charcuterie board of moose sausage, reeindeer jerky and Norrbotten cheese with organic Cabernet Sauvignon.
Nature lovers
A dramatic landscape, in so many ways still wild and untouched by civilization to this day, yet the home of the aboriginal Sámi and rare animals for generations. Here, you find mountains pre-dating the ice age by 450 million years, pristine rivers, some of the Europe’s northermost pine moors and vast tajga forests. Explore it with snowmobiles, dog sleds or skis in winter; or with bike, boat or on foot in summer. The cuisine is a true outdoor food experience, using what nature provides. Water from the river, with fresh fish or reindeer stew prepared over the open fire. For after; steaming hot coffee is waiting to be poured from the blackened kettle.

ICEHOTEL number 26 opened its frozen doors two weeks ago! ICEHOTEL is the world’s first hotel made of ice and snow and is reborn each year in the village of Jukkasjärvi, just north of the Arctic Circle. The spectacular frozen monolith is made entirely of ice from the free-flowing river Torne, and is open from mid-December to mid-April every year. This #BirthdayBucketList of the week is devoted to this spectacularly sparkling experience.
Each year the rooms are completely different as new artisans come to the area to carve art sculptures out of the ice. The artists vary from year to year, so that each rendition of the hotel is unique every season that it reopens. Not only is this #BirthdayBucketList devoted to sleeping in this temporary hotel, but it also serves as the setting where you can host the COOLEST (pun intended) birthday dinner party on the planet.
