- The Scene:
- Among the most requested Italian event destinations are Liguria and Tuscany. And right between these two regions is a surprising gem called Gulf of Poets. Also known as Gulf of La Spezia, this place is off the beaten path yet easily reachable from abroad and conveniently located near Cinque Terre, Pisa, Milan and Parma.
Grand Hotel Portovenere is located in the most panoramic point of Portovenere, a small sea village with a rich history and wonderful mix of natural and manmade landscapes, characteristics that led UNESCO to include it in the list of World Heritage Sites.
The hotel’s historic building used to host the Saint Francis Convent in the XVII century. It was carefully renovated with special attention to maintaining the original architectural features and revisiting them in a modern way to ensure maximum comfort. - Design:
- You can still admire many original features of the ancient Convent, such as the ancient brick-vaulted ceilings at Venus Bar and the arches on the façade of the hotel. The "Cloister Terrace Junior Suites" feature a panoramic terrace under the arches that belonged to the cloister of the St Francis Convent.
- Standout Venue Features:
- Portovenere is easily reachable not only by boat, but also by bus and by car – unlike other nearby villages of Cinque Terre where car transit is forbidden. Guests who book directly with the venue can use the on-site garage parking free of charge.
- Extra Perks:
- Book direct with the venue to use the on-site garage parking free of charge.

- Palmaria Restaurant
Palmaria Restaurant is based in a spectacular veranda overlooking Portovenere. You will find yourself inside a sort of contemporary sailing ship that is about to sail towards the horizon: the choice of rubberized teak wood flooring, in nautical style, recalls the ancient technique of caulking, ie the waterproofing of the hulls by the numerous master caulkers of the Gulf of Poets. The cushions, made by a local upholsterer, are yellow, pink and green just like the colors of the houses in the village of Portovenere.
Here nothing is left to chance: a refined atmosphere and candlelit dinners, first-class service, a menu made up of marine flavors and entrusted to the professionalism of our Executive Chef whose team will know how to satisfy even the most demanding of palates.
The menus are inspired by the "Grand Tour", that is, the long journey in continental Europe, particularly in Italy, that was undertaken by the European aristocracy, from the seventeenth century. The Chef proposes combinations "between land and sea" where octopus, anchovies and "muscles" typical of the tradition of La Spezia are the protagonists, but also the excellence of the Ligurian hinterland and the neighboring regions. At lunch, we propose light and well-balanced unique snacks and salads while still keeping a selection of more eclectic and refined dishes on the menu.
Palmaria Restaurant, which is part of the Italian Celiac Association (AIC), is attentive to the specific needs of its customers and also offers gluten-free menus. The complete exclusion of gluten from the diet is not easy to achieve as the cereals that are not allowed are found in many dishes of Italian culinary tradition, but the awareness and professionalism of our team will able to offer a menu specially designed for the celiac. - Bars & Lounges:
- Venus Bar is located under the high-vaulted brick ceilings of the historic building that once hosted the San Francis Convent. This is an ideal place where to have a drink and relax at any point throughout the day. During the warmer months, you can sit on the sea-view terrace and gaze at the beauty of Portovenere and Palmaria Island while enjoying a cocktail prepared by our bartenders.
