Venue Setting

Campfire, an innovative new dining and cocktail concept in the heart of Carlsbad, CA captures and celebrates the spirit of the campfire by utilizing live fire cooking techniques and creating an environment in which friends and loved ones gather together to share great food and drink. An original concept comprised of a vast 6,000 square foot indoor/outdoor space aimed at engaging guests and inciting conversations among strangers, Campfire is designed by award-winning firm Bells and Whistles, diners can expect whimsical references throughout - a welcoming space to enjoy classic cocktails and honest rustic food, all reminiscent of the camping experience.

A market-driven menu pays homage to the freshest bounty of each season. Using ancient and primitive live-fire cooking methods inspired by the idea of sharing food with friends around the fire, Campfire's ever-evolving menu is centered on the communal dining experience, placing a strong emphasis on locally sourced and sustainable seafood and meats alongside vegetables coming from some of the city’s most well-respected purveyors. Harnessing the potential of the custom 12-foot hearth powered by a Grillworks grill (affectionately referred to as Grace) in the heart of the restaurant, the menu utilizes wood, charcoal, embers and ash to create technique-driven yet deceptively simple dishes that let the ingredients speak for themselves, each with their own story to tell.

The food at Campfire is complemented by an innovative stream of beverages crafted to create a palatable synergy between bar and kitchen. With an emphasis on classic cocktail techniques and quality spirits and liqueurs along with freshly squeezed citrus and locally grown produce, the beverage program is seamlessly aligned with the culinary vision, focusing on the seasonality of the ingredients available. As with the dining menu, guests can expect a multi-sensory experience produced by the hints of smoke emanating from live fire cooking techniques, reminiscent of the great outdoors.

With a keen attention to detail applied to every aspect of the restaurant’s cocktail and culinary direction, Bells & Whistles placed a similarly strong emphasis in its design approach on instilling a sense of camaraderie throughout the space. Transforming the former auto repair shop anchored by a WWII era Quonset hut-style corrugated metal arch from nearby Camp Pendleton, the designers set out to preserve the historic integrity of the space while infusing the existing structure with a fresh, modernist edge. Incorporating vintage relics sourced from all corners of the country, Bells & Whistles charted their course with the intention of harkening a sense of nostalgia in guests - evoking memories spent camping along the California coastline. Mindfully sourcing inspiration from the natural attributes of the nearby ocean and its surroundings, the designers pulled from the camping narrative to infuse the restaurant with of-the-moment yet equally antiquated elements aiming to subtly transcend guests to an experience reminiscent of the age-old camping culture. From a handcrafted banquette made by local artisans Bradley Mountain to an outdoor 12-foot custom tipi for the children, Bells & Whistles created a blueprint designed in a manner intended to encourage interaction and synergy among guests from all walks of life. Whether enjoying a cocktail at the 25-seat copper bar, sitting down in the dynamic gathering space marked by a custom carved three-dimensional mural depicting a mountainous landscape, or catching a glimpse into the glass-encased bustling kitchen, each guest is invited to gather around and celebrate the spirit of the Campfire.

How The Venue Report Team is Gathering for Thanksgiving this Year

Campfire Restaurant

2725 State Street, Carlsbad, CA, United States

As Thanksgiving crept up closer on our calendars and we began to think about our team’s Giving Gathering 2.0 (read about last years here), we were decidedly against cooking, planning and designing the perfect seated meal. Instead, we chose to get out into our local community, support a burgeoning business whose values align just so with our own and simply enjoy a shared meal with The Venue Report family where we could reflect on the past year and not only be full of thanks, but also of giving.

Questions that are staying at the forefronts of our minds include: What worries you? What ignites a spark in you? What can you do to make a positive impact on our future?

Campfire Restaurant

2725 State Street, Carlsbad, CA, United States

Attention: It’s currently fall. And with that comes lots of fun things like pumpkins, spices and lattes… oh wait. Don’t think about saying the words ‘pumpkin spice’ and ‘Campfire’ in the same sentence (even though this is a delightful duo in any other context). We’re talking about fall’s influence on Campfire, the restaurant, for the second installation of Fall Into Flavor. Catch up with part one here.

Proudly proclaiming a market-driven food and cocktail menu, owner John Resnick is sharing how autumn’s changing of the leaves inspired the most recent menu. Resnick, Chef Andrew Bachelier and the team are influenced by what’s fresh and local, to the day. Giving careful consideration to the proportions of the menu (the food menu is equally appointed with meat, seafood and produce), the revolving door of Campfire’s menu ensures each visit is totally new, seasonal and as delicious as ever.

CAMPFIRE + GATHERING

Campfires are known as a way for people to gather, chat and tell stories. How did you translate the idea of a campfire setting to a space meant for gatherings?
Campfire Owner, John Resnick: Yes! It is all about people coming together and talking to each other. For us, that means creating a space that encourages and helps foster that idea and behavior. We’ve tried to cultivate a space that encourages people to focus on each other, to talk to each other. Everything else in the space – the lack of TV’s, the delicious and memorable booze and food, the warm and authentic hospitality, the music and lighting – literally every detail of the space is aimed at getting people to feel good about being here, to enjoy spending time here with friends and loved ones, to enjoy telling stories here and hopefully, to creating some new ones.

Campfire Restaurant

2725 State Street, Carlsbad, CA, United States

When you think of camping, what image comes to mind? Childhood fishing? Building a campfire? Roasting s’mores? This classically nostalgic activity is about gathering those closest to you for a weekend of connecting, eating and drinking. After all, don’t we all know that a camping trip done right revolves around food… and the campfire? That’s the exact feeling, memory and emotion Carlsbad’s most unique restaurant, Campfire, is bringing to all who gather there.

John Resnick, a veteran in the San Diego culinary scene, bundled up all of the aforementioned warm-and-fuzzies as well as the smoky, soulful tastes of the campfire to bring this sensory experience to Northern San Diego. Resnick’s deeply rooted history and love for the ocean, outdoors and yes, food, has brought his passion from Point Loma to Little Italy and finally, to its permanent home in Carlsbad. Read along while Resnick shares his inspirations, passions and the road that led him to opening up his long awaited dream, Campfire.
