Venue Setting
This neighbourhood is our favourite part of London. The vibe is open, innovative, productive and adventurous. Walkable, bike-able and let’s-get-lost-able, Shoreditch is the open-air version of what we aim for each Ace Hotel to be: a place you never want to leave. The vintage shopping on Brick Lane is unparalleled, and Shoreditch is known worldwide as a mecca for street artists like Banksy, Eine, Kid Acne and Conor Harrington to name a few. Along Redchurch Street you can buy the best stuffed jalapeño of your life. You can find handmade leather goods on Calvert, and David Adjaye’s Dirty House is a few blocks away on Chance Street. Vietnamese on Kingsland Road is the best, there’s no better place to get bubble and squeak than Rivington Street and locally-brewed craft beer flows like water in our neighbourhood pubs. By the time you think you’ve seen it all there will be something new, and you can start getting to know Shoreditch all over again, like meeting up with an old friend. Originally a suburb outside of the City of London, Shoreditch was the place where culture, arts and outsiders banned by the city's fathers could find a home and thrive. Archaeologists recently discovered here the foundations of The Theatre where Shakespeare’s first plays were performed, too. The brick-making trade in the area dates back to medieval times. Textile and furniture manufacture also thrived here, centering around the Old Spitalfield’s Market and the timber yards at the west bank of the River Lea. Today’s Shoreditch contains echoes of its industrial and artisanal past in the form of cottage industries and studios where craftspersons specialize in niche and handmade goods – for as long as anyone can remember, it’s been a place for making things.
