Gathering | birthday partyAn expansive dinner table set between the horses isn't the usual starting point for a 40th birthday party, but for one lifelong animal lover, it made perfect sense. Inspired by the world of Beatrix Potter, the birthday girl enlisted Margot Laporte of Tabloo Margot to bring a decidedly grown-up version of those beloved storybooks to life. The result was Release the Beasts, a wildly imaginative celebration staged entirely on the host's own property.
For our Field & Country collection, it's a shining example of what happens when a host looks at familiar surroundings with a little imagination and whimsy. A stable becomes the dining room, a pond becomes a gathering place, and a childhood favorite becomes the inspiration for an entire evening. Behind the elaborate production is an entertaining idea worth borrowing at any scale: the spaces you already have, the things you love, and a willingness to get creative can be the makings of a celebration entirely your own.

The birthday girl had long dreamed of hosting a dinner inside her beautiful horse stables, an idea that immediately appealed to Margot, a fellow equestrian enthusiast. But the inspiration went back even further, to childhood evenings spent listening to her mother read the tales of Peter Rabbit and his woodland companions. For her 40th, those two parts of her life came together in a fairy-tale dinner party with a mischievous streak. The dress code invited everyone to arrive in character, resulting in a rather wonderful assortment of carrots, woodland animals, and hunters.

With the cast assembled, the celebration began with a walk through the small forest on the property, leading guests to a pondside reception. There, Catering Cachette served aperitifs and a selection of bites inspired by the evening's theme. Margot used the property's wooded paths and waterfront to give each part of the evening its own setting, an idea worth borrowing for gatherings in gardens, courtyards, or outdoor spaces with room to explore. And with the main event still a secret, there was one more destination to reveal.

And then came the grand reveal. Guests were led into the horse stables to discover a long dinner table set between the stalls, with a miniature garden running down its center. Margot had traded traditional floral arrangements for a runner of fresh moss, carrots, and parsley, bringing the lushness of the surrounding grounds directly onto the table. Overhead, dramatic botanical installations brought another layer of greenery into the stables, while green ceramic plates and delicate metal chairs carried the garden-inspired palette across the place settings.
For a brief appearance before dinner, young animals joined the scene, exploring the edible greenery as guests took in the surprise. They were then moved to a spacious stable where they could roam freely for the remainder of the evening. What emerged was a tablescape that belonged unmistakably to its setting, using the familiar materials of a country stable to create something wonderfully unexpected.

The evening's entertainment came courtesy of a live pianist, who started with music over dinner and eventually added vocals to the performance. Before long, guests were dancing beside the tack room, with the clubhouse reserved for the afterparty.

You don't need a stable full of horses to borrow a page from this particular storybook. Start with something personal: a family tradition, a favorite childhood story, or a corner of your home you've never considered entertaining in. Give guests a reason to participate, let the setting inform the details, and don't be afraid to put dinner somewhere unexpected. That's the spirit of our Field & Country collection: gatherings that make the most of the places we love and give us a few new ideas for bringing people together.
