Who knew a simple circular light could be so eye-catching? We sure didn't! With social media and thousands of photos framing our feeds, it’s rare a photo stops us in our tracks.

One of 2025's biggest trends for gatherings are experiental events, so when  a series of photos of an event showcasing a captivating circular light installation at an incredibly unique venue space in Belgium went viral on social media a couple of weeks ago, we had to find out more. We did a little digging, and guess what? That arresting light installation everyone's been buzzing about is called HALO. It was the star of a private event put on by Revive, a sustainable development company, in an old power plant in Schelle, Belgium (that can be rented for events and photo shoots.)

A Power Plant Party at an Industrial Chic Venue Space

The celebration took place at Interescaut, a gigantic abandoned power plant venue in Belgium. Revive gave it a makeover, turning it into apartments and offices—industrial chic at its finest! Repurposing this industrial giant perfectly reflects the company’s focus on sustainable development, and the event itself needed to be sophisticated, memorable, and innovative.

Event design agency Tabloo Margot collaborated with Erased Studio, a Brussels-based creative studio to conceptualize the one-of-a-kind light installation and event.

“We wanted to create an experience that resonated with the industrial grandeur of the power plant while subtly guiding guests through the evening’s flow. The sheer scale of the space was both inspiring and daunting. Our vision was to use light as a dynamic element, a sort of ‘halo’ that would define zones within the vastness and create intimate moments within the epic setting,” said Margot Laporte, founder of Tabloo Margot.

Vacant Venue = Perfect Palette

A good recipe for almost everything in life:  just add food, music and spectacular lighting. Toss in an experiential moment for your guests along with a unique event space and you have yourself a perfect ten.

The venue space, Interescaut, is the former power station of Electrabel. The site is special, being located on the Scheldt River with lots of nature but also with traces of a historical and industrial past. Revive, the company who hosted the event, recently became co-owner of the site. The once largest coal-fired power station in Europe was opened in 1930,  the steam boilers and turbines continued to run for seventy years until electricity production was stopped in 2000. Revive's goal is to renovate the historic space and turn it into a sustainable residential and nature development.

Interscaut is an ideal venue location for corporate events, unique dinner parties and projects such as film and television recordings, theater, events. The unique industrial vibe would also make an epic space for a chic dinner party, fashion show or unique wedding. Currently, there are two spaces at Interscaut that can be rented for gatherings:

  • 'The Turbine Hall' is a large hall and the heart of the site with soaring ceiling are of an impressive height that can accommodate up to 990 guests!
  • If you are hosting a smaller gathering, 'The Old Refectory' space is perfect for up to 250 guests for a cocktail party affair or 180 guests for a seated dinner. This venue space offers a beautiful view of the Scheldt and the green banks on one side, and a view of the impressive turbine hall on the other side. The ceiling consists of a beautiful authentic stained glass window and you can still see where the control panels were located from the tile pattern in the floor.

A HUGE Trend for 2025 - Experiental Gatherings

The real magic was how a simple light installation transformed the venue space. Initially, tilted at 45 degrees, it acted as a projection screen and cleverly hid a staircase. As the evening progressed, it was raised, revealing the stairs and inviting guests to the next level. Later, positioned horizontally above the kitchen, it spotlighted the culinary artistry. Lastly, it transitioned to a vertical position, becoming a dramatic backdrop for the DJ. Each shift of the HALO marked a new phase of the event, effortlessly guiding guests through the aperitif, walking dinner, and after-party. It provided guests the opportunity to ‘discover’ the next phase, adding a touch of drama and curiosity to the event.

Moreover, in addition to being functional, the eye-catching light installation was also aesthetically pleasing. Evocative of the sun, it added warmth and light to the otherwise empty power plant space. “Our biggest challenge was taming the immense space. We needed to create a sense of intimacy without losing the power of the industrial setting. That’s where the HALO came in,” added Margot.

The HALO itself was built using lightweight yet robust materials, chosen for their ability to diffuse light beautifully. The structure was designed to be both visually striking and technically sound, capable of being moved and repositioned by a crane. “Suspending a large circular light installation from the existing overhead crane – a crane that, by the way, was still operational! – was a feat in itself. Our technician even had to get certified to operate it! This allowed us to position the HALO dynamically throughout the event,” remarked Margot

A Guiding Light: Follow the Circle

The dynamic movement of the HALO was key to guiding guests. It wasn’t just a lighting installation, it was a visual cue, a subtle nudge towards the next experience. As it shifted, it subtly redefined the space, creating new focal points and encouraging exploration. It was a choreography of light, guiding the flow of the evening without ever feeling forced. It was all about crafting a sense of discovery and wonder, letting the guests become part of the story unfolding around them.

HALO wasn’t just a light, it was a performer in its own right. Its movements were meticulously orchestrated, a ballet of light against the vast backdrop. As it tilted, rose, and shifted, it cast long, dramatic shadows that danced across the walls and floors, converting the space into a living canvas. The interplay of light and shadow created depth, drama, and a sense of constant discovery. Furthermore, it served as a reminder that even the most industrial spaces can be transformed into something truly welcoming with a bit of creativity and a whole lot of light.
