Pull up a map of Italy. Now zoom in on the Southern end and keep your eyes peeled for a string of islands near the tip of the boot. These tiny volcanic jewels are the Aeolian Islands, one of which is the ruggedly beautiful Salina, home to the family-owned Principe di Salina—a 12-room boutique hotel that feels like a luxury private villa, overlooking the Mediterranean.

Open from April through October, Principe di Salina is the kind of place you picture when you dream about a getaway far, far, away from your cubicle. Between the infinity pool, Sicilian-inspired decor and meals alongside deep blue sea views from your own private terrace—excuse us while we go look for flights…

Sicilian Food? Per Favore!

It’s hard to argue against the notion that Italian food just tastes better in Italy, right? Principe di Salina gives food lovers the full (yet healthy!) Italian culinary experience. The lightened-up menu is influenced by Sicily and dinners are served the Italian way—family-style and made from the freshest local ingredients. Chef, the family's monarch, is a nutritionist who creates the perfect mix between Italian flavors and light cuisine with balanced, fresh and high quality ingredients served, of course, only on Sicilian ceramic— Mama Mia!

Principe di Salina’s yearly April re-opening perfectly coincides with prime produce season—the lemon and orange trees are blooming, herbs and vegetables have sprouted (used in oils), and the fisherman have returned to the seas to catch fresh fish. The hotel has also just opened a juice bar, which takes advantage of the island’s abundant local fruit.

Sea Views From Every Room

The hotel is designed as part of the mountain, built over four terraced levels with a spacious, open floor plan that maintains total privacy. The four types of rooms (Classic, Charming, Superior and Deluxe) are mostly white and furnished with locally made straw, bamboo and coconut décor, highlighted by traditional Sicilian pieces. The restaurant is for hotel guests only, and offers a private meal for a lively dinner or fabulous luxury event.

The communal areas are equally beautiful, complete with indoor dining areas with fireplaces and lounges where you can chat your way through the night with a bottle of wine. Kick back (and pose for photos) in the infinity pool, then test the benefits of the mineral-rich geothermal pool, which boasts benefits like reducing stress, relieving pain and solving skin problems.

Island Hopping

Salina is home to 4,000 residents, making a vacation there feel like a true escape. Rent a scooter or bike to explore or visit the local wineries to taste the sweet malvasìa wine. The island’s surrounding waters are a scuba diver’s fantasy, with clear waters and abundant sea life. Boat trips between the other islands are easy with Principe di Salina as a relaxing home base, and the hotel will happily help you personalize your adventures.
