Allow us to indulge in a birthday fantasy scene. You’re some place very far from home, sipping wine in a cozy bed inside a cabin on the side of a mountain, gazing out a floor-to-ceiling window at rolling green pastures and trees, when a sweet little doe goes hopping past. You turn to your travel buddy, raise a glass and toast to the year ahead being equally filled with moments of surprise. If that sounds like your kind of birthday celebration, let us introduce you to this fabulous mountainside retreat in rural Slovenia.

The Stay

Mountain View Glamping is a little collection of timber-and-glass framed cabins dotted along a hillside overlooking the Julian Alps and the Southern Limestone Alps (aka Karawanks or Karavanke Mountains). The cabins are almost entirely self-contained with a comfy bed, an indoor and outdoor seating area and a fireplace. Each has a private bathroom with a shower just a few steps away. The little deck outside proves a lucky birthday spot for deer sightings and sunset wine sipping. A wander through the gardens offers ample opportunities to snap an apple right off a tree or pick a handful of flowers to bring back to your cozy digs.

The Place

The cabins are located in what’s known as Slovenia’s sunniest little village, Dovje, in the Gorenjska region. Year round, the mountains are the main draw here, with cross-country skiing at nearby resort Mojstrana being a big winter hit and hiking, cycling, climbing and waterfall chasing on the agenda the rest of the year. You’ll have two options for hanging around town, either in charming Dovje or its twin city, Mojstrana, both of which have plenty of delicious dining options and markets to explore. So basically, you can spend your birthday hiking in a national park, gazing at waterfalls and finishing the day with a pizza and an excellent glass of wine.
