Sunny days are almost here again! Hooray for that because we alllll know that Summertime, and the livin’ is easy… To get your engines revved for Springtime and Summer, check out this salty sun-kissed seaside gathering filled with creatives.
This day spent in Montauk celebrating a photo exhibition of the Côte d’Azur is certainly high on our summer-lust list. With its artsy reputation and proclivity for amazing music, what better place to hang on a breezy summer day than The Montauk Surf Lodge?
Mega-talented photographer Sybil Steele and stylist Sheree Commerford of Captain and the Gypsy Kid put together an exhibition at the Surf Lodge, showcasing photos Sybil had taken in the South of France, as curated by Sheree. This match-made-in-Heaven kicked off their exhibit with a summer bash, surrounded by friends and fellow creatives.
Oysters And Chilled Rosé, Hooray!
"This was a brunch with the added twist of including an exhibition of our Côte D’azur collection collaboration with Captain and the Gypsy kid aka our talented & super-styler friend Sheree Commerford.
Rosè was a-flowin’and we ate delicious lobster rolls and fish outside in the fresh salty air underneath a canopy of giant cane basket lights. It was a sea lovers delight thats for sure!
We were so please to mingle with some old friends and also to meet some of New York states finest folk who made it out to that fun & dreamy brunch in the Hamptons." - The Beach People
Super Summer Hotspot
With the combined feeling of being off the grid and still part of a bohemian cool community, The Surf Lodge is probably Montauk’s most popular destination to spend a night out during the weekend.
Entertainment at this lakeside lodge has been known to feature anyone from the Flaming Lips to Willie Nelson to Patti Smith, and the beautiful simplicity of the surroundings is a refreshing alternative to the club scene that’s so popular throughout the Hamptons. With a minimalist stage setup that requires performers to walk through the audience to get to and from the stage, the shows here provide an incredible level of intimacy with these well-known musicians.
“The Surf Lodge has a very relaxed coastal vibe, where you can have a glass of rosé and enjoy a lobster roll or take a standup paddle board and go for a paddle on the lake. It’s a very active place where there’s always something happening – live music, DJs, group yoga, outdoor surf films…” - Sybil Steele
The Inside Scoop
Built in the late sixties, this retro surfers’ lodge has since been transformed into a modern bohemian paradise for both Hamptons-goers and the anti-Hamptons set. It’s not uncommon to see surfers who have been calling Montauk home for decades alongside fashion elites or celebrities. The Lodge includes 20 modern rooms with a tropical chic twist. Rooms feature such fun décor elements as hanging rattan swing seats, surfer photography, hammocks and the like. You can expect loads of sunshine in these cheerful rooms.
The Surf Lodge Restaurant is an open-air space right on the water with indoor and outdoor seating. The décor is nautical with a flare for the modern. The menus are seafood driven, with added emphasis on fresh-from-the-market produce. Expect to see the fishermen delivering seafood right of the boats docked at Montauk Harbor daily.
Around Town
Montauk is the hip little spot at the edge of Long Island, just past the Hamptons. Historically known as a sleepy surf town, Montauk has become the summer destination for people of all walks. For those looking to explore, be sure to check out the Montauk lighthouse at the end of the island.
For surfers, Ditch Plains Beach is said to have the best surf break. Ditch Witch and Montaco are two of the best beachside food trucks in town. Don’t forget to also check out Ruschmeyer’s while you’re out there!
Nothing says launch party like buckets of chilled rosé, oysters by the dozen, and these cute little summery cabanas. With cozy outdoor picnic table seating and a gorgeous indoor display of photos, the Surf Lodge was a dreamy place to show off this collection.
